AppIn Search vs Doofinder
Looking for a Doofinder alternative for WooCommerce? Here's an honest, side-by-side look — pricing, request limits, multilingual depth, and where each one genuinely wins. AppIn is in public beta; we'll say plainly where Doofinder is the safer pick.
All pricing and limits are checked against each vendor's live pages. Vendors change plans — verify the current numbers on their sites before relying on them.
Which one should you pick?
No universal answer — it depends on what your store needs. Here's the honest split.
Choose AppIn if
- ✓You run WooCommerce and want semantic, typo-tolerant search that understands intent — not just keyword matches
- ✓You want 100,000 requests/mo and 100+ languages with true cross-language search, at a flat €49
- ✓You sell across languages and want one multilingual index, not a separate engine per language
- ✓You're comfortable adopting a public-beta product, and value BYOK + EU (Germany) hosting
Choose Doofinder if
- •You want a proven, mature product (4.9★, 2,000+ installs) with a documented track record
- •You need merchandising rules, recommendations, quizzes, analytics, or image search
- •You sell on more than one platform — Shopify, Magento, PrestaShop (30+ integrations)
- •You'd rather trust an established vendor than a newcomer, even at higher request tiers
Side by side, honestly
Every figure checked against each vendor's live pages. Verify current numbers before relying on them.
Not a claim. A test you can reproduce.
We ran 26 test searches through both search boxes on the same live WooCommerce demo store — 2 spelled correctly, 19 misspelled, 5 describing the product instead of naming it. Ten of them are shown here in full, with exactly what each engine returned. Run 2026-07-13 on the Storefront theme, with each engine's index verified against the catalogue first.
Scored “relevant” only when the top results actually matched intent. The pattern matters more than the number: Doofinder is genuinely strong on typos — it recovers misspellings a keyword engine would drop — but it has no semantic understanding, so it failed every query with no keyword overlap (drinks-cold → backpacks, shelter → camping stoves). It also never returns an empty page, which is why it fails the “gift” query by padding it. AppIn's wins are exactly those meaning-not-words queries.
The honest column is ours, too. AppIn fails “gift for someone who loves the outdoors”: nothing in the catalogue is a gift, so the right answer is to say so — instead we return insulated parkas. In the previous run (2026-07-09) we also failed “hyration pak” with zero results; that recall gap has since been fixed, which is the one score that moved.
The scoreboard is 26 searches; the ten above are shown in full so you can see what each engine actually returned. Doofinder tested on its trial tier with default settings; AppIn with its production reranker on — the real out-of-the-box behaviour of each. Measured on the Storefront theme, because the demo store's own theme uses a custom search form that only AppIn's widget binds to, which would have left Doofinder without a search box at all.
Two things you are entitled to know. This is a small, deliberately hard set — 19 of the 26 searches are misspelled on purpose — so it is not a general ranking of these products; it is a stress test of the ways shoppers actually fail. And Doofinder was measured on 240 products where the others ran on 192: its index would not drop the 48 we withheld, and the plugin offers no way to force a full re-sync. The 192 are a uniform slice of the same 16 product types, so the gap is very unlikely to move its score — but the row is not identical to the others, and we would rather say so.
Single English catalogue. Cross-language search (a German query against an English catalogue) is not tested here, so we make no claim about it.
What actually counts as a “request”?
The headline request numbers only compare if you know what each vendor counts. This is where they differ most — and it's straight from Doofinder's own docs.
AppIn — a short, closed list
Searches, chat, catalog updates
- ✓A search query (weight 1.0)
- ✓A chat message (weight 1.0)
- ✓An index or delete API call — so catalog sync does count (1.0)
- ✓An autocomplete suggestion — just 0.1 each
That's the whole list. No charge for widget impressions or dashboard use.
Doofinder — many actions count
Searches — plus a lot more
- •Search queries — counted from the 3rd keystroke; one search can be several requests
- •Indexing — an export of 1,000 items generates 10 requests; every feed run counts
- •Crawler — each page crawled is one request
- •Recommendation carousels — each on-page impression
- •Quiz Maker — opening it and each screen
- •Admin navigation — even browsing the stats page counts
Source: Doofinder support docs. So 10,000 Basic requests aren't 10,000 customer searches.
Practical read: on a busy store, Doofinder's 10k Basic requests can run out well before 10,000 real searches. AppIn's 100k map closely to actual searches, chats, and catalog updates.
One index, or one engine per language?
If you sell across languages, this is the biggest architectural difference — and it changes both search quality and how much you maintain.
AppIn — one multilingual index
A German query finds an English-described product. One sync, no per-language setup.
Doofinder — one engine per language
Each language is its own engine with its own feed. Cross-language search isn't documented.
Where Doofinder is genuinely stronger
These are real advantages. If they matter to your store, Doofinder is likely the better fit — and we'd rather you know that up front.
Maturity & track record
Funded company, thousands of stores, a 4.9★ WooCommerce plugin with 2,000+ active installs.
Merchandising control
Boost, pin, or bury products, plus category merchandising — control AppIn doesn't offer yet.
Recommendations & quizzes
Cross-sell recommendation blocks and a Quiz Maker, included across all tiers.
Analytics
Real-time AI alerts on trends and anomalies, and 365-day analytics on the Advanced plan.
Image / visual search
Search by image on the Advanced plan — a capability AppIn doesn't have.
Platform breadth
Native WooCommerce plus 30+ integrations — Shopify, Magento, PrestaShop and more.
Both start at €49 — here's what that buys
The comparison isn't the entry price — it's what's included and how each one scales.

400,000 requests/mo · visual search, 365-day analytics, merchandising.

The like-for-like read
At €49, AppIn includes far more monthly requests (100k vs 10k) and a stated 50k records cap. Doofinder's comparable request volume sits around its €149 Pro tier — but that tier also brings merchandising, analytics, recommendations and platform breadth that AppIn doesn't match. Pick by whether you need higher request volume or the broader mature feature set.
Frequently asked questions
Is AppIn a replacement for Doofinder?
Not a like-for-like one. AppIn overlaps on AI semantic search, but lacks Doofinder's merchandising rules, analytics dashboard, image search, and 30+ platform integrations. Choose based on which set of capabilities you actually need.
Which supports more languages?
AppIn states 100+ languages via bge-m3 multilingual embeddings, including true cross-language search. Doofinder states 30+ languages, with each language handled by its own Search Engine.
Do the request quotas count the same things?
No. Doofinder counts searches (per keystroke from the third character), indexing runs, crawled pages, recommendation impressions, quiz screens, and even admin navigation. AppIn counts searches, chat, and index/delete calls at 1.0, and autocomplete at 0.1 — nothing else.
How do the entry prices compare?
Both are €49/mo. AppIn's Pro includes 100,000 requests, up to 3 sites, and 50,000 records. Doofinder's Basic includes 10,000 requests; higher volumes are on its €149 and €349 tiers.
Does AppIn work on Shopify or Magento?
No. AppIn is WooCommerce-only in public beta. Doofinder supports WooCommerce plus 30+ platforms including Shopify, Magento, and PrestaShop.
Where is my data hosted?
AppIn is hosted in the EU (Germany, via Hetzner). Doofinder is hosted in the EU (Spain) with GDPR compliance and a DPA available.
