THE VERDICT

Which one should you pick?

No universal answer — it depends on what your store needs. Here's the honest split.

Choose AppIn if

  • ✓Shoppers describe what they want — typos, partial phrases, descriptions — not just exact names or SKUs
  • ✓You lose sales to typos and zero-result pages (especially on FiboSearch's free tier, where fuzzy is off)
  • ✓Your store or your shoppers are multilingual, and you want true cross-language search
  • ✓You want search that understands intent without maintaining synonym lists, and you accept an EU-cloud service at €49/mo

Choose FiboSearch if

  • •Shoppers search by exact product names or SKUs, and keyword + typo tolerance (PRO) is enough
  • •You want a proven, mature plugin — 100,000+ installs, 4.9★, maintained since 2016
  • •Company policy is "nothing leaves our server" — FiboSearch is fully self-hosted
  • •Budget is tight (~$59–99/year flat) and you have a large catalog to search on your own hosting

REAL BENCHMARK

Keyword finds words. Semantic finds meaning.

26 test searches on the same live WooCommerce demo store — 2 spelled correctly, 19 misspelled, 5 describing the product instead of naming it. Ten are shown here in full, grouped by type so you can see exactly where the line falls. Run 2026-07-13 on the Storefront theme, with both engines given a working search box first.

We tested FiboSearch's free version — the one 100,000+ stores run. PRO ($59–249/yr) adds fuzzy typo tolerance and manual synonyms, so it would likely recover the misspelled searches, and that row is not a verdict on PRO. It does not add semantic search on any tier — per FiboSearch's own docs every tier is keyword-based (matching + edit-distance + synonyms), so the descriptive searches fail regardless of what you pay. Where its 3 out of 26 comes from: both correctly-spelled searches, plus the one query where the right answer is to return nothing — "a gift for someone who loves the outdoors" is not a product, and FiboSearch says so. We do not: we return parkas. On that search the free plugin is simply right and we are wrong. On the fairness of the test: our demo store's own theme uses a custom search form that only AppIn's widget binds to, so FiboSearch installed on it renders no search box at all. This run was done on Storefront, WooCommerce's reference theme, where FiboSearch runs exactly as its own users see it — the score is what the plugin does, not an artefact of our storefront. Its free-tier "Fuzzy matching: disabled" is verified in the plugin's own settings. Two limits on what this proves: it is a small, deliberately hard set — 19 of the 26 searches are misspelled on purpose — so it is a stress test of how each engine fails, not a general ranking. And it ran on a single English catalogue: cross-language search was not tested here, so nothing in these numbers supports our multilingual claim. That one you should make us prove separately.

TWO ARCHITECTURES

Self-hosted, or cloud semantic?

This is the real trade-off, and it cuts both ways. Pick the one that matches your constraints.

FiboSearch — self-hosted

  • •Runs entirely in WordPress/MySQL — your product data never leaves your server
  • •Trivially GDPR-clean, no DPA needed, no third-party dependency
  • •No per-request quota, no monthly cloud bill — one yearly licence, unlimited searches
  • •But: quality is capped by keyword matching, and better relevance means hand-maintaining synonyms

AppIn — cloud semantic

  • ✓Real semantic understanding — embeddings + a cross-encoder reranker no in-WordPress engine can run
  • ✓Typo-tolerant and multilingual (100+ languages, true cross-language) out of the box, zero tuning
  • ✓Your catalog syncs to our EU cloud (Germany, Hetzner) — catalog data, not customer PII
  • ✓Honest limit: if your policy is "nothing leaves our server", FiboSearch wins that requirement outright
FAIR & HONEST

FiboSearch is a mature, much-loved plugin. These are real advantages — if they matter to you, it's the better fit.

FiboSearch is cheaper — plainly. The question is what that price buys.

The like-for-like read

FiboSearch Entrepreneur ($99/yr, 3 sites, 50k products) is the closest footprint to AppIn Pro (€49/mo, 3 sites, 50k records) — and it's roughly 6× cheaper per year. But it's keyword search at any tier; AppIn's price buys semantic understanding, typo tolerance on every plan, and true cross-language multilingual. Pick by whether keyword + typo tolerance is enough, or you need search that understands meaning. While the founding programme is open, the 2-month free trial makes AppIn low-cost to evaluate.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is AppIn a replacement for FiboSearch?

Not a like-for-like one. FiboSearch is a mature, self-hosted keyword search plugin; AppIn is a cloud semantic search service. Choose by whether you need exact-keyword search on your own server, or search that understands meaning.

Does FiboSearch do semantic search?

No. Every FiboSearch tier (free and PRO) is keyword-based — matching, typo tolerance (PRO), and manually-maintained synonyms, per FiboSearch's own documentation. No embeddings or vector search in any tier.

Is FiboSearch cheaper?

Yes. FiboSearch PRO is $59–249/year flat, roughly 6× cheaper per year than AppIn's €49/mo. AppIn's cost buys semantic understanding and cloud multilingual search. Match the tool to what your store needs.

Does the free version handle typos?

No. FiboSearch's fuzzy matching is a PRO feature — it is disabled in the free version (verified in the plugin settings). PRO adds it. AppIn is typo-tolerant on every plan, including the free trial.

Where is my data hosted?

FiboSearch runs entirely on your own server (WordPress/MySQL) — data never leaves it. AppIn syncs your product catalog to its EU cloud (Germany, Hetzner); only catalog data, not customer personal data.

Which handles bigger catalogs?

FiboSearch PRO's inverted index handles large catalogs on your own hosting (up to 150,000 products per site by tier). AppIn Pro covers 50,000 records in its cloud.

Try it on a real catalog before you decide

Our live WooCommerce demo store has 240 real products. Try a typo, try a description — then judge. 2 months free, no card — while our founding programme is open.
